Yes, I spell Alexx with TWO X's. That's because two is better than one ;) I am a 30 year old traveling photographer based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. Primarily focusing on intimate weddings, elopements and lifestyle family photography
I am SO happy you are here! Let’s dive in!
As a couples photographer, one of the most important aspects of my job is to tell the unique story of each couple I photograph. Whether it’s an engagement shoot or a wedding, it’s my job to capture the love and connection between the couple in a way that is authentic and genuine.
When I mentor other photographers, I try to encourage them to step away from the typical posing. The kind where the photographer feels more like an entertainer and the client feels like they need to be entertained. We want to avoid this when trying to tell a genuine story through pictures. Here are a few tips for telling a great story through your couples photography:
Number One
Get to know your clients: The more you know about a couple, the better you’ll be able to capture their unique story. Take the time to ask about their relationship, love languages, their interests, and what their favorite part of their story is
Number Two
Scout out locations: The location you choose can play a big role in the story you tell through your photos. Think of the couple’s personalities and interests when scouting out locations, and try to find a spot that is meaningful to them.
Number Three
Prep your clients: They may have never stepped in front of a camera, or their only experience with photos may have been at a studio inside the local mall where they had to pose perfectly or mom was going to lose it! Let them know how you shoot. They can relax while you hang out in the background, prompting when necessary.
Number Four
Pay attention to lighting: The lighting can have a big impact on the mood and feel of your photos. Consider the time of day, the weather, and the available light when planning your shoot. A mid day shoot outside will add a very different element than a mid day shoot in a cozy cabin with stunning light.
Number Five
Tell a cohesive story: When editing your photos, think about how you can create a cohesive story that captures the couple’s relationship. Choose a selection of photos that work together to tell a complete story. I will be sharing a post next week on details and how those detail shots add elements of a story that are so essential.
I am confident that following these tips will certainly guide you to capturing beautiful, meaningful photos that truly tell the unique story of each couple you photograph!
